The fundamental difference according to experts is the a letter of credit (LC) is an instrument that ‘always’ results in payment whereas a bank guarantee (BG) is more of a security that may or may not end in payment.
In some countries, a Stand-by LC is used instead of BG – they are essentially one and the same thing in most cases.

Just got my Nikkor 18-200mm lens. The damn thing is a beauty. I am using it with my Nikon D50.

Mall Space Downturn

I was buying some camera equipment from a shop in DT City Center.
We got discussing the mall boom (as I described it to him). He was not very +ve of the boom. Accordindg to him the 2 busiest malls on the Gurgaon MG Road are DT City Center and MGF (across the road to DT City Center).
He pays about Rs. 50,000 rent for 323 sq. footage of space. According to him on a Saturday / Sunday the mall sees about 1000 footfalls at its peak. This was not the case about 3-4 months ago. His business have been affected by Ambience Mall (near the toll plaza).
To cite an example – he mentioned how he would charge pretty much anything for his cameras and the customer would pay for the convenience of being able to buy in Gurgaon. Now with Reliance Digital and Jumo Electronics have stolen the march. They are now selling the same camera at a retail price wihich is much lower than his accquisition cost.
How does one compete? To me the answer is in tapping the secondary mark. In London there are the big malls selling the best brands at highstreet prices and sometimes on sale. They have the volume and price advantage. The smaller shops have moved on to selling / trading in second hand goods – cutely displayed with prices and condition on the shop windows. These items include used phones, cameras, psps, video games, movie cd’s, watches, etc.
Not everyone can afford new but everyone wants one.
This is the way to go. Hopefully, my own investment in “Landmark the Mall, Sector 66, Gurgaon” will see better times in the years to come.
